When blogging hit the market, there was a rush. Blog search engines, aggregators, what all. The same thing is happening with podcasting. — and it’s sort of hard to believe. But what I’ve noticed is that it’s always the people who do it first (obviously), then the audience (the people who do it need an audience), and then the companies follow — filling an obvious need in the market. The market gets too big with too many of the companies, while a new thing starts up, and they all switch to the new thing.
Don’t get me wrong, though. The old things always stay, but it’s the new things that get featured on CNN and get a hype. Noticing this pattern, a thought came to my mind. What next? I would say we currently have gotten over the whole blogging thing — it’s there — but it’s old. Podcasting has been hyping all over in the last few months. The do-ers are there, the audience too, and the companies are joining in. In my opinion, give it about another year or two, and podcasting then will be blogging now. But then again, what about the question — what next?
Will it be vidcasting (video blogging), or something else? We’ve gone from text to audio, the images (Flickr) has always been there, but it’s the videos now that people are ‘thinking’ about. Perhaps it’ll be the next thing when bandwidth and Internet connections get cheaper and increase by quantity (the quality too, of course). Or may be it’s just the ‘portability’. You can read text in your laptop or PDA or cell phone, listen to the podcasts on your iPod or MP3 player, but what about the video? Will this do the trick or will the videosphere need more? Let’s find out, shall we.
