Wikipedia: You?re My Idol

Stuff I?ve Missed

Currently, there is only one book I’m reading. However a slow reader I may be, I have to say it’s not my slowness that is slowing the book down but the lack of time. Anyway, the book is Darknet, authored by JD Lasica (one of my other idols 😉 ) from whom I obtained a review copy of the book to review on rev2. As of now, I’m upto about chapter five. And I love it.

There are several reasons for this, but the most important one: this is my stuff! From movie piracy to blogging, it’s the stuff I’ve wondered about for quite a while and I’m finally reading something which is telling me what I want to read. You can buy it off of Amazon.com if you haven’t yet, really worth the read.

Anyway, this post is about Wikipedia and so I’ll try not to go off-topic. I never knew this, but Wikipedia is THE biggest encyclopedia in the world (it’s in Darknet ;-)). That means bigger than any encylopedia you may have sitting in your dusty home library, or the one you may have paid for, including Encarta and Britannica.

You know, this is one of the classic examples of social, open source power versus commercial (*cough* Microsoft). If you had told me, say five years ago (one year before Wikipedia started) that this thing that the whole world can add, edit, delete was gonna be the biggest, I wouldn’t have beleived it — I always thought people were too lazy to do this stuff but obviously that turns out to be just me.

So the latest is, Wikipedia is looking to raise $200,0000 in 20 days — the money I think they truly deserve. You can contribute using PayPal or many other payment methods, but in any case, I hope you do contribute, let it be a dollar, if you use it. If you don’t use it, use it and then contribute — there are still a few more days left to go.

The reason I say “contribute” is because, dude, you have the largest enmcyclopedia in the world available, that to for free, 100% free, no subscription fees or anything, and they have costs: servers to rent, people to pay, places to lease, and who in this world would do be able to do all this if it wasn’t for them? Microsoft? Yahoo? even Google? No, don’t think so. These are commercial companies with commercial tactics, it’s the Wikimedia foundation that can really pull this off and to be honest, they aren’t billionaires. So again, do contribute, even your dollar can help — it’s not how much you contribute, but many contribute. A dollar each and 200,000 people, barely the popular of a suburb in India, and you have $200,000.
