All right, it’s getting to us. First OurMedia now YouTube, a new startup which focuses on letting users upload (upto 100mb), tag and share. I’m impressed, I have to admit. One of the reasons I don’t like OurMedia is because of the Internet Archive fact — it’s just a huge pain in the ass for me to create two accounts in two separate places then connect them to upload a video. I did try, and I failed. But, YouTube avoids this and I actually succeeded (a short-film I made with my nephew).
Such tools enable hundreds of things, especially when it’s all come together with tagging (Internet Archive already does this btw), but I sometime doubt and question these sites. We blame Google Base or the company itself, complaining we don’t want to sell our soul to Google, but in fact, we’re already doing this with such sites. We are giving them our intellectual property in return of a place for them, in away lending our pets to a house until we get back from a holiday.
YouTube is good not to mention their daily iPod Nano giveaway but I think it’s in need of good, quality content (as opposed to what I call ‘extreme home videos’). I think if we have a few film-makers joining we may get it to be like an actual place to watch good stuff.
