Upgraded to WordPress 2.0

WordPress

…a day after it came out. First thoughts, excellent. Just the amount of effort that’s been put into this is amazing. Fancy new stuff in this as well, more Javascript, more AJAX, more slick GUI and more plugin integration (my favourite plugin, the WYSIWYG post editor comes pre-integrated). Would highly, highly recommend it to anyone. You don’t lose your data or your templates or anything (that’s of course if you do it the right way) and it’s simply painless – worth the time also. Just watch out for that FeedBurner plugin. I got mine working with this code and after activating the plugin (but importantly not the ‘redirect all my traffic’ bit):

RewriteRule ^feedburner_RANDOMNUMBERTOREPLACEWITH/?$ /index.php?&feed=rss2 [QSA,L]

RedirectMatch permanent ^/feed$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

RedirectMatch permanent ^/feed/rss$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

RedirectMatch permanent ^/feed/$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

RedirectMatch permanent ^/feed/rss/$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

RedirectMatch permanent ^/feed/rss2$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

RedirectMatch permanent ^/feed/rss2/$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

RedirectMatch permanent ^/atom$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

RedirectMatch permanent ^/rss$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

RedirectMatch permanent ^/rss2$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

RedirectMatch permanent ^/feed/atom$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

RedirectMatch permanent ^/feed/atom/$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/FEEDBURNERACCOUNTNAME

If you have any problems with that don’t hesitate to drop me a message.

Two things I’m not too happy about with WordPress 2.0, one, is its new Admin design change. It looks awefully like the Blogger admin, and I would rather than WordPress had its own rather than go with the flow. Surprisingly also, it was like this in the most previous stable version (grey). I guess it looks alright, but I wouldn’t prefer it. Secondly, it comes with the Akismet spam-prevention plugin which requires an API key. For this API key, you need a WordPress.com accoutn and hence a blog that you don’t blog at (to signup, you need to provide it with blogname.wordpress.com and it creates it for you). I guess it’s their loss, one more useless blog they have to auto-install but on your side, it’s a pain as well, one more thing you have to signup for. Why not just ask for an e-mail and send it to it?

In any case, WordPress 2.0 is awesome. Its upsides totally out-number its downsides which is a yet another reason to upgrade. Do it!
