The Search: The Rise and Fall of Google

Looking at this graph and seeing Google fall makes me want to write a book titled “The Search: The Rise and Fall of Google,” as a sequel to John Battelle’s book. No, I’m only kidding. But still, it’s kind of sad seeing Google fade away (at least in stock). This fall seems to have cost Google $20 billion of their shareholders’ wealth. Shareholder not happy.

I am interested in the fact that almost 100% of Google’s revenue comes from Adwords. I find this disturbing, because as a software developer who has worked professionally with Adwords for over 18 months, I have yet to meet a single customer who feels that Adwords adds a positive ROI to their business. And I have worked with a _lot_ of these dissatisfied customers.

All the hype around Google is based on two things – their search technology, and their phenomenal income through Adwords.

Now, what I see, looking from the grassroots up, is a huge pyramid scheme, where unsuspecting advertisers are being pursuaded that Adwords is worth investing in. Above them is a sea awash with Adsense spammers, all gleefully earning money for themselves and the almighty Google.

I wonder what will happen if the “tipping point” is reached, when Adwords subscribers pull the plug and the whole empire collapses.
