Social networks have got to the point where you have to do ‘wild’ things to get noticed. Living to this is newly launched New York-based social network BetsGoWild. The idea behind it is that users can, as it states in its tagline, “bet on anything, against anyone, anywhere.” It’s worth noting though that all betting is done for play money and it’s more of a game than anything.
How BetsGoWild works is that users make a statement (i.e. “Apple is better than Microsoft”) and put it up for betting with a pot of however many ‘wildbucks’ involved). Other users then pass on their opinion on the bet with a ‘yes way’ or a ‘no way.’ When the bet ends (set by the original user), whichever side got the most votes wins and the users are compensated with the appropriate play money. In the process, users get to interact with each other — which makes BetsGoWild a social network, community, and digg-like site all into one.
There has been no doubt a huge increase in online virtual role-play gaming sites as such, and I think this is going to appeal as time passes. As for BetsGoWild? I don’t know if it’s the next MySpace, but it makes a good time-passer.
