Just a quick shoutout to the NetSqaured conference, which will be happening for the second time on May 29-30. NetSquared has announced the 21 featured non-profit startups that will be demo’d at this year’s conference. The conference will provide funding to the projects and will help connect the featured projects with developers, consultants, to further develop.
Non-profit startups are something rarely covered on Rev2 – and I just wanted to give a quick mention to all the cool stuff that’s out there. From their featured projects include communities which are using Web 2.0 technology as a force for change in Africa, connecting consumers with organic farmers, and building a community responsible social network. Also among the projects, and one that specifically stands out, is the Democracy Platform, which a free, open-source, open standards Internet TV service.
I think as Web 2.0 gains more mainstream attention, the non-profit space is definitely going to grow. We’re already seeing a lot of cool stuff, and with more services being open-source and open standards compliant, people in the industry will have a chance to help, in their own way, where help is needed.
