The folks over at Meebo have opened up Meebo Rooms to the public. They described the new service as “chat rooms on steroids,” allowing users, friends and website visitors to meet and chat anywhere. A couple of interesting features give Meebo Rooms that “something else” that is necessary to compete in this crowded field. Meebo Rooms allows its users to create a room and to embed that room on their own website. Users with an embedded room on their site can choose to receive notifications when visitors to the site join the room, and can chat with their visitors.
If you like sharing URLs with other chat room users, Meebo Rooms has added the ability to share the URL in the chat room so other members can see it. This is an interesting idea so long as you don’t like chatting with people who like videos like this or this.
Opinion
There are already quite a few rooms that have been created, I am surprised to see most of the rooms with multiple videos running and quite a few people chatting. This latest offering from Meebo could lead to a plethora of new messaging services more closely integrating media and communications, and could add significantly to the user base of Meebo.
