I was very pleasantly surprised when I happened upon sputtr. This beta service which launched on May 8th, 2007 lets you search all sorts of web services from one simple customizable page.
sputtr has web 2.0 written all over it. The main page is simple, eye catching, and incredibly useful. The search box is as you would expect, but below the search box you will see many icons of services you can search with this site. All you have to do is type your search query into the box and hit the button below.
When you click the customize button near the top of the page, you are shown a dialog box which lists many other useful web tools you can search. These buttons can be added down below and the ones that were there before can be replaced. If you like Wikipedia, IMDB, DeviantArt and Yahoo but not Google you can simply remove it!
I have seen many services take a swipe at this functionality, but undoubtedly sputtr has done the best job. This is a huge time-saver when you need to find different information in random places. You have access to everything from Google to Reddit to Last.fm. This brings together many different great sites under the header of sputtr. Well done.
