One of the hugely popular markets these days is the teenager/young adult crowd. MySpace or Facebook, they all have a cell phone (or an iPhone!), and 3Guppies is among the many new startups that plans to leverage the missing convergence — letting you ‘mobilize your media.’
A free service, the signup process is relatively simple with 3Guppies. Enter your cell phone number, manufacturer, and model, and complete your profile. Once that’s done, there are basically four sections to the website: Ringtones, Pictures, Videos, and Widgets. Users can upload their own content (with limitations — such as a 30 second MP3) and also browse through their premium catalogue and view various selections from the web.
Once you’re ready to make a selection, you can add the files and content to a ‘virtual locker,’ which can be accessed through the phone you specified in the signup process. While several services as such in the past have existed, 3Guppies stands out with its integration with MySpace and the ability to literally get any type of file into your phone (or at least anything your phone can read).
Currently in beta and U.S. only, 3Guppies takes an idea that seems relatively obvious and old and no doubt comes across as a service which actually fulfills it. For teenagers and the young demographic, this could prove to be a useful service. One of the things I’d love for them to make is a Facebook Application — it’d be valuable for them for the marketing of the service, and prove useful to a large number of Facebook users.
