NowPublic, the Vancouver-based “crowd-powered media” startup we wrote about last October, has announced a $10.6 million in Series A funding. The round is being lead by Rho Ventures.
Crowd-sourcing, or citizen journalism, is an old old idea that has been gaining a lot of hype in recent years. On NowPublic’s board include citizen journalism-gods Dan Gillmor and J.D. Lassica.
While such announcements take place everyday, NowPublic is one of the few fully crowd-sourced news websites on the Internet, and this is one of the first times an investor has backed such an idea. Additionally, this casts a money-full spotlight on Vancouver, which is becoming Canada’s growing tech-city.
There was no mention of in which parts NowPublic plans to make use of the money, but we’re likely to expect some good things in the space.
