Yeah I was totally pissed at how they did this. Trying to keep myself from rambing on and on about it, but I am just so sick of this political correctness, now even at tech events.

Good article. I too was at FOWA Miami and was thinking the same thing. My wife works in event and conference planning, and I can tell you: when there are industry events for event/conference planners, the ratio of women to men (whether speaking or attending) is about 7:1 in favor of women. These ratios just happen to be tied to each particular industry and the genders each industry attract. I dont think it has anything to do with favorism or a 'boys club'. There are less women in tech, especially in software development. No need to make a big fuss about it and have a session about it (especially since the attendees paid to hear talk about software development and such).

thanks for the report. Your samples of speeches about "open social" and how a wine business can help you learn about the future of technology are so true. I experienced similar rehashed speeches at the last event I went to. At some point it just gets too much.

Nothing wrong with getting the word out, but (frankly) conferences are about the content. Academia has been stuck with this kind of tired quotacratic thinking and look where it's gotten 'em.
