Thanks to the internet and social media, children are now enjoying things that the previous generations were only allowed to do at a much later age, according to research by security firm BullGuard.

The company’s CEO, Nedko Ivanov, said: “Children display different levels of maturity and as a rule you can’t always say every child is ready to do this or that by a certain age.”

According to a poll of 2,000 parents with children aged 8 to 12, most kids nowadays possess a smartphone and have television sets in their rooms. Young people are also pressuring their parents to buy the latest devices.

“Most children will pester their parents and demand the latest gadgets, but it’s important to also take into account whether or not they’re ready for what they might encounter and, if they do start using this sort of technology, to make sure they are safe online,” he explained.

Additionally, parents said that they would only allow their kids to have their own email account when they reach 11 years old, but 70 per cent of the respondents revealed that they permit their kids to surf the internet without any supervision.

Ivanov stressed the need for an organization to standardise the ratings of every website to ensure that their content is suitable for minors. This can also aid in the creation of stringent filtering systems so that children won’t be able to access unsafe portals.
