If you live where auto accidents are relatively common and, worse, litigation from those accidents is even more common, then you will want to consider something like this. The Garmin Dash Cam 20 is a great gift idea as well.
This is a small dash camera you add to your car to record your driving and accidents in a way that can be used to clear you from tickets, lawsuits, etc. It easily mounts on the dashboard, windshield, etc. without requiring tools or modification to your car. There are several models, but this one includes a 2.3-inch LCD display on the back so you can playback recorded footage immediately. It also takes snapshots for still images (insurance purposes) and can be removed from the vehicle quickly in an accident. An integrated microphone can record the happenings inside your car as well, helping preserve reactions and perhaps vital information over and above the video.
The Garmin Dahs Cam also detects incidents and automatically saves footage of those on the unit or a MicroSD card. Otherwise, it records in a loop, recording as much as it can before writing over the beginning of the loop. Its wide-angle lens captures the entire road in front of the car when the unit is positioned correctly. It does so at 30 frames per second with time-location stamp (via GPS). It plugs into your car, but can operate for up to an hour on batteries alone.
A really useful thing to have and a great way to protect yourself and your auto insurance rates if an accident should happen.
